My Trip To The Snow

In the holidays I went to Ohakune with my whole family.  The first thing on Friday morning I went to school with my brother.  His name is Daniel.  We didn’t take our school bags to school with us because we were not staying for lunch.  We were at school a little while and then my dad picked us up.  Next we picked up my older brother Tini.  Tini can drive.

Together we drove to the airport to hire a snow car so that we could drive in the snow.  After that my dad drove the new car home and my brother Tini drove our old car home.  At home we waited for my mum and baby sister.  My mum was at work.

When my mum and sister arrived home we packed our stuff into the car and we drove away.  When we got to the motorway my mum and dad spotted my aunty.  She was ahead of us on the motorway.  My uncle and nephew were in the car with her.  My aunty spotted my mum and dad in her rear vision mirror.  We followed my aunty and she led us off the motorway to a McDonald’s.  At McDonald’s my mum got us sprite and some Georgie pies.  The Georgie pies tasted good.  They were mint and cheese.

After we had eaten we drove back onto the motorway.  We followed my aunty to Ohakune.  It took us a long time to get there.  When we got to Ohakune we stayed in a house, but we didn’t have to pay.  It was like a hotel.  After dinner we got out our sleeping bags and went to sleep.

In the morning we got changed into our warm clothes and then we went to the snow.  When we got to the snow we went to a house.  At the house I hired a snowboard, a jacket and some gloves.  Then Frank, my cousin’s brother, told us we could join a snowboard school.  The funniest thing was when I snowboarded down the slope and fell into the snow.  I accidently ate the snow.  It tasted like water.

After the snowboard lesson we went to the very top of the mountain.  When we got there we snowboarded down.  We always fell down.  It was cold so my cousin and I went down on the gondola.  Later we went back to the house that we were staying in.  It was fun snowboarding on the mountain.

Duffy Writer

Today my class and I went to the school hall.  We went to listen to John Pulu, who is a writer and journalist.  He was our Duffy guest speaker, and he came with Hayden from Mainfrieght.  The Mainfrieght company pays for our Duffy Books in Schools.

John writes, presents and acts for TV1 and TV2. He works on the Tagata Pasifica programme which is on Sunday mornings at 7-30am, and he also works on the Fresh progamme.  Fresh is on TV2 at 10-00am on Saturday.  It is funny show in which John wears a Pacific Island dress and a girl's blonde wig.

John comes from the Kingdom of Tonga.  He came to New Zealand when he was nine years old and he went to Otahuhu College and then later to University.   John can read and write really well.  As a child, and now as a man, he reads and writes a lot.  When John was a teenager he said to his mum that he was bored in the school holidays, and she would tell him to go and read the Bible.  His favourite book is called Harry Potter.

As part of his job John has been overseas, including to the Pacific Islands.  He loves going back to Tonga because that is where he was born.  John's parents and his family are proud of him, and happy that he has such a good job, and is so good at reading and writing.  His family love him very much.  I think John Pulu is cool, and I would like to be a writer just like John one day when I grow up.

Sunday

On Sunday I went to the pools with my mum, dad, my brother Siu and my younger sister Cindy.  First I went on the slide.  I climbed on the ladder and I slid fast down the slippery water slide.  Later we went home to practice my song for church.

After that we went to the zoo to look at the pandas.  The skin and fur on the Pandas' faces were black and white. Their ears and the fur around their eyes were black. Their bodies were black and white, and their legs were black.  The pandas were holding up sticks and biting them.

Then we went home and had a sleep. Later we went to my cousins birthday party. We had birthday cake and we sang happy birthday to my cousin.  We all had fun.

On Saturday my family and I went to Mini Golf.  First we went to the man and payed to play golf.  Then we were given our golf sticks and ball.  After that we started to play golf.

Visiting Samoa

My Auckland family and I went to Samoa for the holidays to visit our family who live there.  One of my favourite days was the day that we went to the beach in Samoa.

My cousins and I played in the sand.  After that we played in the water.  I practiced going under water and holding my breathe.

After that we all ate a little meal, and then I went back into the water to play with my cousins.  We played mermaids.

Later we went back home.  I love going to the beach in Samoa.  I had a great day.  I love going to Samoa very much.

During The Holidays

During the holidays I went to Mission Bay with my dad.  We went to the park and we played.  When I was on the ladder it turned upside down and it moved around by itself.  It was scarey!

After that we went to Auckland city in our car to meet a person in the ice cream shop.  While we were there we got an ice cream.  I had a chocolate and gummy bear ice cream. It was yum and my dad had a vanilla and kiwi fruit ice cream.

In Auckland city we saw lots of big buildings and we saw lots of people.  The people were walking around and some of them were rushing around.  They looked like they were having fun.  I had a fun day going to Mission Bay and into Auckland city with my dad.

On The Weekend

On the weekend it was my little cousin Nicolle's birthday, so my family and I went to Rainbow's End to celebrate.  It was night time.  My cousin had an ice cream with sprinkles.  I got a balloon for my cousin.  We were in a light room and my mum and my dad did the decorations.

Then it was time to cut the cake.  My little cousin blew out her candles and she made a wish.  She wished for a happy day. Then Nicolle opened her presents. When she was finished we all went home.  At home I read Nicolle a story.  She said, "I had a happy day".

In The Holidays

In the holidays my whole family and I sent to the Inflatable World to celebrate my brother's and my birthday.  My other family came at 12:00, lunch time.  When my family arrived I was waiting for my friend from school.  His name is Oliver. Oliver gave me a Ninja Turtle toy and a Spider-man mask.

Then Oliver played with me.  We played a boxing fighting game.  The rules of the game are that you have to hold a big stick and you fight with someone.

After that we went upstairs to eat.  I had chips, sausage and a savoury.  Then we had dessert.  My brother and I also had a chocolate birthday cake.  It was yum.

After dessert we went back to the boxing.  Later my mum, my brother and I dropped Oliver home.  Then we went home.  I had a fun birthday.

Visiting My Brother In Hospital

During the holidays I went to the hospital because my brother had a pain in his head.  We always take my brother to the hopsital when he gets sick.  He was in Ward 4.  When I went there he was on the bed, on his phone talking to someone.

While we visited him I had a hot chocolate and a danish pastry and my mum had a coffee.  We stayed with my brother for a while.  After that I went home with my mum.

Going To Skateland

In the holidays my family and I went to Skateland.  I got my own skates, but there was something wrong with them.  This was because there were plastic wheels on my skates, and so the man gave me some new skates.  I said thankyou to the man for my new skates.  My new skates were coloured orange.  I liked their colour.

The woman said ,"We're going to have races".  I was always the first one to complete the races because I was fast.  When Skateland was finished we went home.  It was fun going to Skateland.  I wish I can go there again soon.

Climate Change and Tuvalu

Climate Change and Tuvalu

Key Terms
Global Warming
Climate Change

In Room 1 we have been studying Climate Change.
We have found out that some things that we are doing are causing the atmosphere around the earth to change.

The Earth’s climate is slowly getting warmer.  This is called Global Warming.  Global Warming is causing the ice to melt and the oceans to rise.

Because of this low lying Islands, like Tuvalu, are becoming covered in sea water.  The houses in Tuvalu are being flooded, and so the Tuvalu people are having to move to new countries.

We think that this is very sad.

Red Table:  Giselle, Augustine, Brielle, Tyrah, Angelina
Key Phrases
Cows
Poisonous methane gas
Sewage seeps into our waterways

When the cows eat and digest grass they fart poisonous methane gas and they pooh.  The methane gas goes into the air and causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  This causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu.

Also the cow pooh goes into the grass and pollutes our rivers and the sea.  This causes the fish to get sick and die.

Pink Table:  Ellma, Lolenese, Paul, Deva
Key Phrases
Tractors
Poisonous carbon dioxide gas
Chemical sprays

Farmers use their tractors to plough the land before they plant their crops.  If they have cows they plant grass.  They also use their tractors to spray chemicals over the grass to help it to grow.

The tractors give off poisonous carbon dioxide gas.  The gas goes into the air and causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  Then this causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu.

Also the chemical sprays pollute our rivers and the sea.  This causes the fish to get sick and die.

Yellow Table:  Ofa, Erich, Estherose, Cruzinho
Key Phrases
Trees being cut down
Trees being burnt
Leading to deforestation
And so making no more oxygen

In many parts of the world trees are being cut down to make room for new houses and to build roads and motorways.  Also in many countries whole forests of trees and jungle are being burnt down to make room to grow food for us to eat.

When we burn trees and wood they release poisonous carbon dioxide gas into the air.  When this happens it causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  This causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu.

Also here is another important fact.  Trees need carbon dioxide gas and sunlight to live and they use this to make oxygen.  Do you know what this process is called?  It is called photosynthesis.

We need oxygen to breath so it is important that we have lots of trees.  If there are not enough trees to turn poisonous carbon dioxide gas into healthy oxygen we will all cough a lot and get very sick.

Blue Table:  Agata, Lupe, Peter, Chester, April
Key Phrases
Factories,
Smoke emissions,
Chimneys

Factories and power plants release smoke and a variety of poisonous gases from their chimneys.  Sometimes the poisonous smoke and gas is so thick that it smothers the earth.

This causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  This causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu

Also, lots of people have to breathe it in and it makes them cough a lot and they get very sick.

Green Table:  Noah, Eli, Matthew
Key Phrases
Cars, motorways
Exhaust,
Carbon emissions smother the earth

Most of the vehicles that we drive on our roads and motorways, such as cars and trucks, give off poisonous exhaust fumes.  These exhaust fumes are poisonous gases.

This causes global warming.  The earth gets warmer and this melts the polar ice caps.  This causes the sea to rise and flood low lying islands like Tuvalu

Also in places where there are lots of vehicles driving around their poisonous gases make people cough and get very sick.

Queen's Birthday Weekend

Thank you God for the long weekend.  It was Queen's Birthday Weekend.  On the weekend I went shopping with my mum.  The first shop we went to was Pack and Save.  My mum bought me a bottle of water and a pottle of yogurt.  At the check out counter we gave the woman seven dollars. Next, we went to the clothes shop.  At the clothes shop my mum bought my sister Christine a T-shirt.  It had a frog on it.  She also bought a pink dress for herself.  The dress was two dollars.  We paid the man at the counter.  Then we left to go to Boohoo.  At Boohoo's my mum bought me some shoes. They had flowers on them, so my mum bought them because she knows that I like flowers.  After we had finished our shoping we put all of our things in the car.  We got into the car and I said, "I love shoping".  Then we drove home.

Queen's Birthday Weekend

Thank you God for the long weekend.  It was Queen's Birthday Weekend.  On the weekend I went to Bounce and Beyond.  I went with my uncle's friend's daughter. Bounce and Beyond is a kind of fun indoor park.  First I went on the big slide.  I went fast down the slide. I also sat on the King's Throne.  After that I climbed Bouncy Mountain.  It was fun but hard to climb up.    I liked the King's Throne the best because it made me feel like a king.  Later my mum came and picked me up.  It was fun.  Then we went back home.

Queen’s Birthday Weekend

Thank you God for the long weekend.  It was Queen’s Birthday weekend.  On the weekend I went to the cinema with my uncle and my two cousins.  First my uncle Daniel picked me up from my Grandma’s place.  Then we went to my cousins’ place.  One of my cousins is sixteen years old and the other one is nineteen years old.  My cousins are girls.  After that we drove to the cinema in my uncle’s truck.  At the cinema we watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie was about four Teenage Mutant Turtle’s.  They were all brothers.  Their names were Raph, Leo, Mickey and Donnie.  The four brothers all had different skills and characteristics.  Raph was mean and strong, Mickey was funny and silly, Donnie was smart like a scientist, and Leo was the leader of the Ninja Turtles.  The movie was very silly in a funny kind of way.  When the movie was finished we went back home and I had a fun day.

Mr Peabody and Sherman

Thank you God for the long weekend.  It was Queen's birthday weekend.  On the weekend I watched Mr Peabody and Sherman.  I watched the movie at home with my whole family.

Mr Peabody is a dog and Sherman is a boy.  Sherman is a very smart boy in his class.  There is also a girl in the movie. Her name is Penny.  Penny didn't like Sherman and so she called him a dog at school.  Then Sherman bit Penny on the arm.

The teacher took a photo of Penny looking sad, because Sherman had bitten her on her arm, and so she was sad. Next Sherman told Mr Peabody that he was sorry for biting Penny.  Mr Peabody said that he didn't want it to happen again.

After that Sherman explained to Mr Peabody that Penny had called him a dog.  Mr Peabody understood because Sherman was speaking English and not dog language.  Later Penny's parents and Penny went to Sherman's house.  Mr Peabody suggested that Sherman show Penny her rock collection. Then Sherman accidently showed Penny the Lab.

Something happend in the Lab and Penny ended up in Egypt, but later she got back home.  It was a fantastic movie! I wish that I could watch it again.

The Weekend

On the weekend I went to the pools with my dad and my sister.  We changed into our swimming togs at home, so when we got to the pools we went straight into the pool for a swim.  The first thing that I did was a cartwheel, and then I did a flip.  Next I swam under the water.  When I swam under the water I could see other kid’s feet.  They looked different under the water.

After that I got out of the pool.  We were hungry so we had our snacks.  Next I went back into the water and I played with my sister.  We played piggy back.  I went on my sister’s back first and then my sister went second.  We loved playing the piggy back ride on each other.

Later we went on the slide.  I went down the slide slowly, but at the bottom I went fast.  I made a big splash when I ended up back in the pool. Then my dad said we had to go home.  First we got dressed and then we went home. I love going to the swimming pool with my dad and my sister.

Inquiry Topic

In Room 1 we are learning about climate change.  We are learning about what makes the Earth healthy and what makes the Earth sick.  Knowing this is important because the Earth is the planet that we live on.
The things that make our planet healthy include;
Plants
Trees
Vegetables
Our Eco System
Composting
Recycling
Oxygen

The things that that make the Earth sick include;
Rubbish waste
Carbon Dioxide
Toxic Waste
Plastic bags
Plastic bottles
Plastic spoons, knives and forks
Polystyrene

In science we are learning that the things that make the Earth sick are contributing to Climate Change and in Social Studies we are learning how Climate Change is affecting people who live on low lying islands in the Pacific.

St Patrick’s Day

Yesterday was St Patrick’s Day.  We are at St Patrick’s school so yesterday was our feast day.  We celebrated by going to Mass and then we played some a special activities.
After church we came back to school and we had our morning tea.  Then we went into our groups and we played outside activities.

All of our teachers had different activities for us to play.  With Sister Evalesi we threw bean bags over cones and then we threw bean bags into a hoola hoop.  Our partners held the hoola hoops up high so getting the bean bags into them was a bit of a challenge.

Miss Craig had the potato race and two different relay races.  It was difficult keeping the potato in the spoon as we ran around the cones.  After that we did the relay races.  They got harder and harder so we had to concentrate really hard.

Mrs Twomey had throwing tennis balls into a bucket and throwing frizbees into a bucket.  This was also difficult so we had to aim and focus on throwing the tennis ball, and frizbee, into the bucket.

With Miss Chao we played Rob the Nest Game.  It was important to be a team player and run fast. At the end the team that had the most balls (pretend eggs) was the winner.

Mrs Dines had the Train Game.  We had to hold the hoola hoop and go from side to side while running around the bag.  Then we picked up bag, get into it and jump.  We had a fun morning playing sports activities.

After lunch we did Art and Craft activities.  These were fun too.  St Patrick’s Day was a great day at our school!
